Kate Mitchell

I am 14 years old Kate Mitchell, daughter of Geanelle Mitchell Alexander and Paul Mitchell. I am the first of three Children and a form 4 student of the St David’s Catholic Secondary School.

As a child, my mother helped me in realizing that I was vocally talented and very creative. I will often write my songs and sing to my mom and younger siblings who always encouraged me. I was shy and very much afraid of performing for any audience outside of my family.

In 2013, I wrote a song that I showed to my mother and expressed my willingness to compete in the Junior Calypso Monarch. Immediately, she called teacher Eddie and took me with what I had written to see him. Teacher Eddie worked along with my song and turned it into a calypso. That year in the junior calypso competition I was able to secure the fifth position. The following year I was able to secure the 6th place. In 2015 I did not qualify for the finals however that did not break my spirit, it only motivated me to push harder. I  remained positive and optimistic looking forward to the year 2016, that year I place 2nd in the Junior monarch.

This year with the continued support of teacher Eddie and Nicky and my mum, I was crowned the Junior Calypso Monarch of Grenada. Everyone’s concern was with my presentation since they were all very confident in my ability to deliver. However my aunt and Role Model Michelle Sabrena Alexander wrote a perfect intro which was acted out by my neighbor and fellow contestants.

I will like to use this opportunity to thank the Spice Mas Corporation for such an opportunity. I believe it’s an excellent exposure for young calypsonians. However, I will like to advise that more promotional activities be done to encourage more persons to support this event.’

I am Kate Mitchell, 2017 Junior Calypso Monarch and I am Grenadian.
