Delano Dick

As a youth I wanted to be a teacher, pilot, Banker or police officer. I was dissuaded from being a pilot by a lady whom I looked up to; she told me ” black men can’t be pilot ” and I believed her because I didn’t know better. As my time in TAMCC was coming to an end I signed up for the BRITISH army. They sent their package with the Queen’s stamp for me but I did not have the support of local relatives, or the assistance of relatives living in England. I started teaching under the IMANI programme and despite my efforts to secure a permanent position, I was told there was no vacancy. With my tenure under the programme coming to an end, I applied to the Royal Grenada Police Force. I was successful and resigned my job as a teacher. I went through my initial training, probationary period and Refreshers Course, after which I was deemed fit to be a police officer.

When I was four and a quarter years in the service, I did my promotion exam (I was successful), followed by an interview, but I was not promoted when promotion took place 7 mths later (still waiting). There has been many ups and down, embarrassing moments ( like when a high-ranking officer chose to rain on my Parade by asking me “you think is so dey does get rank” infront of staff at a meeting) but it was all good. I worked in every policing division, including Petite Martinique, in the tri state. Nothing good comes easy. If I had a chance to do it all over again, I would, because I am Delano G Dick, I’m from Paradise St Andrew and and I am Grenadian
