I was born and bred in the UK and nurtured in a truly Grenadian way. I was brought up with the values instilled in my mother when she was growing up in the community of Birch Grove, St. Andrews. My mother was raised by the matriarch of our family, the late Catherine ‘Dede’ Ventour, who passed away at the age of 104. She was a strong woman who did everything for her family and even in her final years, her determination to live to see her sons regain good health amazed everyone in our family. She was born at a time where there weren’t many opportunities for women, but her career was being a mother and grandmother who sought to encourage her family to confidently seek betterment for their lives and that of their children. This she stated in a documentary on the Grenadian revolution produced by John Douglas. (Link to interview – https://youtu.be/c6ZBTa47o_w?t=6m29s). She once told me ‘Don’t let anyone put you under the table and stand on top of it’. Her resounding advice has stuck with me to this day and reminds me that no one can dime your shine once it’s brewed with a concoction of self-belief, knowledge, power and love.
Her humble beginnings in the village of Adelphi, St. Andrews and her commitment to her people, community, family and my mother is where I believe my innate love for Grenada stemmed from. Her ‘foot was hot’ and so is my mother’s. It’s no wonder that the one thing I love doing is discovering every corner of our stunning tri-island state. Unlike any other island, Grenada possesses a beautiful balance of all the things nature can offer a human to revitalize their mind, body and soul. Secluded white sand beaches, lush rainforests, refreshing waterfalls, charming beachfront resorts and friendly people all within easy reach. In other islands you get one or the other, but Grenada has it all.
My only hope for Grenada is that we truly realise the full potential of our people and natural resources. I admire the skilled artisans who create craft that is coveted around the globe, the determined hustlers who posses convincing tactics that some of the biggest sales companies desire, the resources produced in our rich soil and the topography of our landscape, which takes my breath away every day. I wouldn’t change anything about Grenada, I only want to see it enhanced in a way that will benefit the economy and encourage more talented and excellent Grenadians in the diaspora to contribute to its growth. At present I enjoy contributing to my country in the area of digital marketing and advertising and will forever be committed to developing our creative industry and economy with the expertise I have gained.
Final Thought: If you’ve ever uttered the words ‘there’s nothing to do in Grenada’, you’re not doing it right.
