SAASS 2017 Young Leaders are Volunteering for Impact

‘Promoting Positive Peer Pressure’ is the slogan powering the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School 2017 Young Leaders. This dynamic group of form threes and fours launched their programme on Monday 31st October, 2016 with an assembly at their school. Since then, they have been moving full steam ahead. Their focus audience is adolescents and they are examining a number of issues with which teens are faced. When asked why adolescents, they state that the modern day teen is bombarded with a number of issues and who best to help them than teens themselves. Already, the SAASS 2017 Young Leaders have completed two themes in their project. The first theme was ‘Free Being Me: Promoting Positive Self-Image’. This saw them making interactive presentations at their school, Telescope Primary and St. Andrew’s School for Special Education.

In keeping with the Christmas spirit of giving, the Young Leaders embarked on their second theme ‘Teens Giving Back’. With donations from the students and staff of SAASS, as well as community members and the kind contributions from three supermarkets in the Grenville area, the students packed two hampers with food items and toiletries for Dorothy Hopkin Centre for the Disabled and Queen Elizabeth Home for Children.

They have begun 2017 exploring the relevant theme ‘Sexuality Awareness’. In conjunction with the Counselling Department, the Young Leaders hosted seminars at their school on Friday 20th January. These seminars sought to educate students on topics such as Puberty, Abstinence and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. The school’s Social and Life Skills Department is also on board with the Young Leaders as for the month of January, their teaching and learning will focus on issues related to sexuality.

In light of the spate of sexual offences in Grenada, the SAASS 2017 Young Leaders have been granted permission by the Ministry of Education to hold a march against sexual abuse in Grenville on Friday 27th January at 12 noon. All are invited to this crucial march which is powered by the banner ‘SAASS 2017 Young Leaders Declare War Against Sexual Abuse’.

Another part of the Young Leaders activism is to erect a billboard against sexual abuse in Progress Park. This visual deterrent is needed as there are no billboards on this social ill in the Grenville area. The Young Leaders, however, simply do not have the funds for this venture. And so, they are humbly calling on the public to kindly assist in this regard. Interested sponsors can contact the school on 442 7542.
